LI: To write a description of life with the Frank family in the annex in 1942
The Annex was silent except for the creaking old wooden floors, the yelling at the doors outside towards the Jewish unlucky to be caught at home during the raids, the loud breathing of the others and the chiming of the ticking clock outside.
It also reeked of the smell of not showering for days. Some nights our stomachs will rumble because of hunger and lack of food, then other nights we would have to eat horrible food like beans, soup packets or vegetables which were bland and very basic. This usually lead to a commotion of some sort but most were grateful for at least having a meal.
Most days it was quiet, but some days all we could hear was screaming. The type of screaming that made my heart beat overly fast. It was so loud I started to worry that the Germans would be able to hear it! The fear of being found was so real, somedays we couldn’t even flush our toilet due to the sound. The hardest part was that we had to be cautious of our movements. Every little step mattered.
We do have windows but we had to block them as well so that the Nazis don’t find us. Being cramped in a small space is boring, so for entertainment we would spy on our neighbours and sometimes even each other. Another girl who was here with me, Anne Frank, recorded everything down in her diary as her entertainment.
My head was racing with any small quiet sound made, I sighed with relief when I heard the Germans drive past our home. Mind you sometimes after those trucks passed, I still felt that tight knot twirling in my throat. I was never ever fully calm.
When we got the yuck soup we got every single night my hands shook and the metal spoon clattered against my bowl. I was too scared to even slurp too loud. I could hear the sounds of Anne scribbling on her diary and the crisp sound of the pages flipping throughout the minutes. I could hear the desperate pleas of our neighbours as they got taken away. I prayed to god for the Germans to have mercy on us.
At night I couldn’t sleep even if I was tired. I was too shocked to fall asleep as the night screams terrified me more as we started to think our time to getting closer.
This week for our Writing our main focus was about Anne Frank. Our task was to imagine that we were in the Annex (Hiding spot) with the frank family. Mrs Anderson created Gemini Gem to drop us hints on what we should say to make it stand out and sound more powerful. Thanks to the help of Gemini our writing sounds more stronger.
